BMR Formula

This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation. Male: BMR = 10×weight(kg) + 6.25×height(cm) − 5×age + 5. Female: BMR = 10×weight(kg) + 6.25×height(cm) − 5×age − 161. Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) = BMR × activity factor (1.2–1.9).

Example

For a 30-year-old male, 170cm, 65kg, with light activity: BMR is 1,568 kcal, TDEE is about 2,155 kcal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What's the difference between BMR and TDEE?

A. BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is the minimum calories needed to sustain life with no activity at all, while TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) adds your daily activity level on top of that to estimate actual calories burned per day.

Q. How much less should I eat to lose weight?

A. Eating roughly 500 kcal less than your TDEE per day is generally associated with about 0.5 kg of weight loss per week. Losing weight too quickly can be harmful to your health, so caution is advised.

Q. Is this formula accurate for people with a lot of muscle mass?

A. The Mifflin-St Jeor equation is an estimate based on typical body composition; people with very high or very low muscle mass may see a difference from their actual metabolic rate. For precise measurement, use a body composition analyzer.
